Fletcher Bay Residence

Bainbridge Island, WA
Facing north toward one of the most intimate bays in the Puget Sound, this residence is a remarkable blend of references to traditional materials and massing but articulated in an unusually contemporary language. The entire design program of the project is protected under a large sheltering roof whose entire structural frame of clear Douglas Fir is exposed to the interior. This creates a visual rhythm that is shows an elegance and permanence throughout the structure. The walls of glass that spring right from the floor create a lightness to the interior that is unexpected from such a traditional enclosure. The glass terrace roof is gently curving in response to the adjacent shoreline. A motif that is repeated and referenced in the entry façade and garden.
