North Shore Residence
Washington State
This new residence fully replaces the existing structure while preserving the location of the original foundation. The footprint has been thoughtfully expanded through the use of cantilevers, allowing the home to gain additional space while responding carefully to the constraints of the site. A steep grade change between the parking area and the main floor created a unique opportunity to position an office above the garage without making the overall structure feel overly tall or imposing. The office is accessed by a bridge, while the space below provides direct access to the water and an outdoor shower. At the front of the home, a trellis creates a comfortable sense of privacy and enclosure while still maintaining a welcoming presence from the street. On the waterfront side, a generous deck provides ample space for both relaxation and entertaining. Outdoor dining is conveniently connected to the kitchen through a large pass-through window, creating an easy transition between indoor and outdoor living. Expansive windows throughout the home bring in abundant natural light while framing sweeping views of the waterfront just steps away. The result is a carefully considered coastal residence that takes full advantage of its challenging site, dramatic grade changes, and immediate connection to the water.
