Port Madison Residence
Bainbridge Island, WA
Port Madison is one of the oldest settled areas of Bainbridge Island with it’s origins rooted in the 1850’s. The clients for this project are confirmed modernists but wanted a residence that would honor the context of the historic homes in the neighborhood while meeting their goals of efficiency, cleanliness and simplicity. The site is a corner lot with severe restrictions for lot coverage and utilities so a modest program was developed of a two-bedroom residence with and under-building garage, small terrace and detached workshop building. As with other SPAi work this project exemplifies the delicate balance and attention to detail in using traditional, recognizable forms but rendered in a completely modern context with simple, elegant connections and details. The residence is approximately 2,000sf so an open plan and the use of built-in cabinetry was essential to fulfilling the needs of the project.
